Spotlight for Inspiration - Severine Alferez Raynaud

Escapade Nocturne

Rocío Mirelis
Severine, even though we weren't able to do the interview through video chat (and we really tried), we can just do it the usual way. Nevertheless, I'm excited to be able to interview you. You are a good friend and I like talking with you! Tell me, where are you originally from and where do you live now?

Séverine Alferez
Thank you! Well, my parents are in the army so I moved a lot. I was born in France, Corsica. II consider myself from Brittany because all my family is from there. I lived in Tahiti for 2 years, though.

Rocío Mirelis
Oh wow, That's wonderful! And where do you live now?

Séverine Alferez
Paris!

Rocío Mirelis
And you are married correct?

Séverine Alferez
Correct, since november 2013

Rocío Mirelis
Newlyweds!!! Congratulations! What does your husband do? Is he an artist as well?

Séverine Alferez
Oh no!  He is a research associate in physics.

Fuite

Rocío Mirelis
Haha! WOW!!! Very cool.
Do you have any children or plan on having children?

Séverine Alferez
We don't have children but we want to. I have myself 6 brothers and sisters but I don't want so much children!

Rocío Mirelis
Haha! Yes, that is a lot of children!!!
Severine, what were you interested in before you got into photography?

Séverine Alferez
Before photography, I was into theater and cinema, I was a comedian for 10 years and a director.

Rocío Mirelis
WOW, that's wonderful! Tell me more about that. How did you get into comedy?

Séverine Alferez
Comedy is a vocation; when I was 7 years old, I saw a manga in TV (Laura ou la passion du théâtre), and I was really influenced by that. But afterwards, I wanted to be an ethnologist and an astrophysicist. At 16, I entered in my first company, and never stopped until 2010. I love so much to tell stories. Because of that love, I was a comedian, and now a writer and a photographer.

Séverine Alferez

At 20, I entered in the Dramatic Conservatory of Arts.

Rocío Mirelis
WOW, that sounds wonderful. This is very interesting to hear. Tell me about your experience as a director!

Séverine Alferez
I was a director in theater and a little for cinema (but only at the university). I liked to be a director because you have to think of every detail and help you actors. Everything has to be meaningful. I use that now in my photos.

Rocío Mirelis
How did you start photography then? And when exactly?

Séverine Alferez
I always loved photography but just like a hobby. I never thought to be a photographer, I was too into theater! At the university, I hated my photography course! It was so boring and I didn't understand their way of thinking about it. I loved to be in the chambre noire though. I was thrilled by the magic in the piece. When I stopped comedy (because I was a little sick to sell myself), I was really sad with my life. I didn't know what to do. I picked up my school camera and started again to feel something. It was in 2011. It was another way of me to tell the stories.

Rocío Mirelis
What is the chambre noire?

Séverine Alferez
ha ha ha dark room

Rocío Mirelis
Why were you sick to sell yourself?

Séverine Alferez
It's really hard to be an actress, I have to go with your voice, your body, your talent. You are judged and when they don't pick you, it can be really depressing because they rejected you. I was not strong enough for that. But I still love theater; maybe I will act again someday, with the confidence that photography has given me.

Rocío Mirelis
Oh ok. I understand. So you were at a time where you were depressed and your turned to your camera. How old were you when you picked up the camera in that time?

Séverine Alferez
26 years old.

Rocío Mirelis
Ok And how old are you now?

Séverine Alferez
29 in December.

Rocío Mirelis
Okay, so you then have a fine art degree?

Séverine Alferez
I have an art degree (cinema/theater) and a history of art degree.

Rocío Mirelis

That's amazing!Love it!!!

Séverine Alferez
merci!

Rocío Mirelis
Now that you are a photographer, is that what you want to do for the rest of your life? Or do you want to pursue another path like theater or cinema?

Séverine Alferez
I want to be a photographer for the rest of my life but I also want to be a director (cinema), a writer, and act again! I just want to be a storyteller!

Rocío Mirelis
That is truly wonderful to hear. I love that you are a storyteller. Where do you think all your stories come from? Are your stories from what you see around you? Are they simply inside of you and you need to make the world see them?

Séverine Alferez
Both, I'm truly influenced by tales (celtic, native american, asian). This tales show me how old civilisations saw the world, how they explained it. I want to take this lessons, extracting the universality (archetype) of this stories and showing to the world my own interpretation on that. To give my answer, and maybe someone will receive it.

Rocío Mirelis
I love it and I can definitely see that in your work! I love the stories you create in your images and how they portray those tales. You are incredibly unique!

Séverine Alferez
Thank you so much!

Rocío Mirelis
Would you say then, that your favorite part of art is telling those stories with your work?
Or do you prefer the actual process of creating the art?

Séverine Alferez
My favorite part is telling those stories; the process is la cerise sur le gateau!

Rocío Mirelis
The cherry on the cake?

Séverine Alferez
yes!

Rocío Mirelis
That's perfect!!! What a beautiful way of seeing things.
Let's talk about your process. What is it like? Do you draw out sketches before doing the shoot? Do you just have the concept in your head? Do you use other models or only self-portraits?

Séverine Alferez
I try to draw....hmmm, not my best part. Usually I read and my mind goes its own way. After I have a picture in my head and something tintes in me. I always have a post it note, a pen or/and a book note with me. I'm better with words than sketches. I have a picture in mind, but when it's time, the result is not always exactly what I thought. I follow my instinct and I stay open. I never work in my pictures (with photoshop) the same day.
It's often myself because I don't have models (I trap my sisters when I can). But I really want to do both, self-portraits and models. (I'm working to have a team, make up artists, models...etc in London, when I move....)

Rocío Mirelis
Why don't you ever work on photoshop the same day?

Séverine Alferez
Because usually, I'm very strict with myself. During the shooting I love my pictures but if I look at them after, in my house I hate them. Nothing is good enough, I'm really harsh. If I wait one day, I'm more objective.

Rocío Mirelis
Ahh! That's a great way to do it. I feel the same way sometimes! It's true. haha

Séverine Alferez
ha ha ha

Rocío Mirelis
Is your work influenced by the work of any other artist? Do you look at other artists for inspiration?

Séverine Alferez
I'm looking at other artists but not for inspiration, just for the pleasure and to learn some tricks. Because I'm easily influenced so, I want my work stay my work.

Rocío Mirelis
I understand!
Let's go back to the topic of photoshop for a few minutes.
Do you think PS is a necessary tool for photographers who create art like ours?

Séverine Alferez
I think it's necessary, it was the same in dark room. But I really want to be more realistic in my work, so I'm working to make much as possible in the shooting (with make up, props....) But there are things we can't fix in the shooting and I'm okay with that. There can't be 2 of myself for example.

Rocío Mirelis
Right, I agree!!!
What is your favorite PS tool?

Séverine Alferez
curves and clone

Rocío Mirelis
Cool, I love curves!
Let's talk about Dreamers, Misfits, and Rebels!!! Our exhibition in Orlando, Florida. It opens next week. How do you feel?

Séverine Alferez
Really happy, but it seems a little unreal for me because it's in another country and unfortunately,, I can't go. I'm super excited because it's the first time for me and a first time in USA; it’s really cool! But I count on you to take pictures for me !

Rocío Mirelis
Haha, I sure will take tons of pictures!!! I'm so happy to hear that you are happy and excited!!!!
Do you want to get into more galleries in the future?

Séverine Alferez
ha ha, Yes. I'm a part of "salon de l'art abordable" in Paris September 12,13,14, and I have a solo exhibition in London in November. I'm also a part of an exhibit in New York in January. My goal for the end of the year is to be represented by a gallerie. And I really want to work in Asia!

Rocío Mirelis
WOWOW!! I didn't know any of that! Congratulations!!!!! That is really exciting news.
What are your goals? Where do you want to be in the next five years?

Séverine Alferez
I received all the news this week. So, it's a new world for me. The next 5 years? I want to host a photography retreatt (in Asia), be represented by a gallerie, publish my book, and take a LOT of photos for exhibitions (with a team). And I would like to be a mom .

Rocío Mirelis
AHHHH Those are wonderful wishes!!! I love to hear it!!!
I'm sure you will accomplish all of this!!!!

Séverine Alferez
cross fingers!

Rocío Mirelis
Is there any advice that you would like to give all the other photographers out there?

Séverine Alferez
Two things: don't give up (because I thought of giving up my dreams, and it was like the end of sparkles in my life) and really shoot what you want, not what you think others will like. I have 6 brothers and sisters and they don't agree in my best picture (this one, no this one, no, the latest, no the first). They don't like all my pictures but they still like a least one of them. So if you like what you do, there is someone who like it too.

Rocío Mirelis
Beautiful, I love it! Thank you so much for sharing your time with us and sharing a part of your life and dreams! You are a wonderful artist and person!

Séverine Alferez
Thank you so much! I loved spending time with you, Keep that amazing personality!
