Once again, I got to interview one of my favorite photographers. This photographer though, is a very young man from a beautiful country whose muse is his stunning girlfriend! He is a man with deep talent that seems to have a lot of more years of experience than he actually does. His work is an absolute success and I'm completely sure that his career will be as well! Rocío Martinez

You are one of my favorite male photographers! If not, my favorite!

Your work is absolutely outstanding! I'm so proud to have you in our group!

Let's start by talking about your life! Where are you from? How old are you?

Norman Cabezas

Thank you very much happy to hear that! :D

Well, I'm From Costa Rica and I'm 24 years old.

Rocío Martinez

WOW, you're pretty young! :D Are you married? Kids?

Norman Cabezas

Not yet haha! I have a girlfriend; she it's pretty much my model and my muse, my inspiration.

Rocío Martinez

I love that! :D A man inspired by his other half!

So, when did you first start doing photography?

Norman Cabezas

I'm a graphic designer and have always enjoyed everything about art and drawing! It was not until I met a friend who had a DSLR camera that I decided to buy one, too, just as a hobby. Then, I started loving all about vintage cameras and old antique styles. I started to buy a lot of film cameras and polaroids! Then, I started taking digital landscapes for fun, playing around with my girlfriend and doing photo manipulations.

Rocío Martinez

Oh wow! That sounds very interesting. Are you still doing graphic design?

Norman Cabezas

Yes I do! I'm doing free-lance for the moment and I'm teaching Photoshop and Illustrator in private. This is because I am still in college.

Rocío Martinez

:D Well, you definitely sound very savvy! At what age did you buys your first camera?

Norman Cabezas

I bought my first camera when I was 20 years old, I think!

It was a Nikon 3100 with a kit lens!

Rocío Martinez

And do you still use all those film cameras?

Norman Cabezas

Yes I do.  I, also have a page dedicated to analog photography.

https://www.facebook.com/NormanAnalogPhotography

I have it a little neglected lately because I've been working hard on some productions I've been doing.

Rocío Martinez

Wow, the page is awesome. I love that! Learned something new about you!! :D

You mentioned earlier that you are still in college! What are you studying?

Norman Cabezas

Well, I first studied business administration and I completed that degree but, I never liked it. What I always liked was art and drawing so, I started to study graphic design two years ago! Then, I fell in love with photography.

Rocío Martinez

That's great though because you know the business part of everything. It makes it easier for your photography!

Norman Cabezas

Yeah you are right! That has helped me a lot!

Rocío Martinez

How did you get into fine art or conceptual photography? How did you discover this type of photography and when?

Norman Cabezas

Through Facebook, I met the work of Erik Almas and it was stunning, It was commercial photography but it always had that conceptual part and surrealism. Then, I saw the work of Salorta Ban; she does digital photo manipulations too. I fell in love with her work!

I discover this type of photography I think a year and a half ago.

Rocío Martinez

Very nice. That's great to know. Thanks for sharing those names. I will take a look at their photography.

When you discovered their work...that was your "aha" moment? Right? You instantly knew that's what you wanted to try next?

Norman Cabezas

Yes, that’s why I love it so much!

Rocío Martinez

Now that we are on the topic, tell me about your stories. What are the dreams that you want to depict with your images? What do you want to show with your work?

Norman Cabezas

Well, most of my images are inspired by human feelings like love, dreams, freedom, hope, fears, etc. I always try to recreate these feelings in my images, trying to bring out some of the feelings to the spectator.

When someone look at one of my pictures, my goal is to bring some of that feeling out, to make them feel that they are in a dream or that there is another world! I like to express all this through surrealism.

Rocío Martinez

That's amazing. I see a lot of photographers that want to bring out those feelings as well... I think that we are all in search of something...or at least... in search of making those feelings look romantic...surreal... we are truly emotive people!

Do you see any kind of pattern in your photography? Or any recurring theme? Is there any emotion that you like to photograph more than others?

Norman Cabezas

I think I do! I think of like the theme of freedom and dreams. About chasing your dreams… to be free and achieve all our wishes!

Rocío Martinez

As a conceptual photographer, do you believe Photoshop is a necessary tool to be successful in our genre?

Norman Cabezas

I think it is not extremely necessary because there are very talented photographers that don't use Photoshop. They have very strong concepts in their photos. I think Photoshop helps a lot in the process to make things happen, though.

Rocío Martinez

What is your favorite Ps tool then?

Norman Cabezas

I think is Curves and Dodge and Burn! Haha!

Rocío Martinez

Those are great. My favorite is curves as well! HAHA!

Norman Cabezas

Haha, curves is the best!

Rocío Martinez

What would your dream concept be? If you had infinite resources...what would your image be like?

Norman Cabezas

Haha, that’s a pretty good question! Well, my dream concept would be shooting in some landscape in Iceland or in some castle with a huge production, with amazing dresses and props!

I wanted to take pictures with wild animals too, with a model and make some concept with that! I think that would be another dream concept!

Rocío Martinez

Those sound like amazing concepts! It would really be super dreamy! Here's my next question... what about business? Have you made your photography a business? (Knowing that you know all about business.)

Norman Cabezas

I have been doing photography just for fun and for the love to the art but now, I have been putting my work out there… like marketing my work and my name to start trying to sell my work!

The thing is that it’s a little difficult in my country because here, the people do not have much of that culture to love art… as other countries like Europe! That’s why the BeHuman exhibition it is going to be a big step for me! :) Thanks Bonnie and Gabe!

Rocío Martinez

That's great! I totally understand what you mean. And yes because of Bonnie and Gabe...all of ou careers will be given a little push! Which is amazing. They are truly wonderful people! I'm so glad that they are part of our team!

So, now that we are on the topic...where do you want your career to go? What are your goals? What do you want to do next?

Norman Cabezas

Well, as we said this is a great opportunity not only for myself but for all the other artists in this group and this is like the first step of where I want to go! One of my goals is to give an exhibition in some gallery here in my country. I want to start knocking on doors in galleries in other countries as well. Another one of my plans is to start doing workshops about conceptual photography, here in my country!

Rocío Martinez

That all sounds amazing. I love to hear that. You most definitely will achieve all those goals.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years then?

Norman Cabezas

Well in five years, I will love to be traveling around the world doing what I love, which is photography. I would love to have grown more as a professional and as a person!

Rocío Martinez

Love it.

Is there anything else that you would like to say about your life in regards to photography?

Norman Cabezas

I would say that photography changed my life because it opened my mind and the door to a different and magical world. All of this has led me to meet amazing people like all of the fine art team! :)

Rocío Martinez

Awe, it makes me so happy to hear that. Thank you! I’m' so glad that we have all met you as well. You are an amazing contributor to the team! Plus, your work is stunning.

What advice do you want to give to all the other photographers out there?

Norman Cabezas

I would say that do what you love and never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something or that you cannot achieve something! The sky is the limit and just shoot and practice a lot! Always do it because you love it and have fun and it all will come together!

Rocío Martinez

That advice is perfect. Thank you so much for telling us all about you, your feelings, and your exceptional work. It was amazing talking with you.

Norman Cabezas

Thank you very much Rocío! It has been a pleasure to talk with you and doing this interview. Thanks for having me and letting me be part of this amazing team!

I'm a little sad that I will not be able to travel to the opening of the exhibition to have the pleasure to meet you all in person but from here I send all of you greetings and my good wishes!

I hope we have the opportunity to meet at another time!

Rocío Martinez

I'm sure that we will have plenty of other opportunities to get into more galleries and get together! Soon enough, we will all be able to meet!

Norman Cabezas

I'm glad to have share a little bit about my self, it's been a pleasure.
